INTRODUCTION: Citigroup is a major financial services company from the United States of America (USA). Its headquarters is in New York City, USA and has presence in over 100 countries, making it a global financial services giant. It is traded in the NYSE and was ranked the largest financial services company in the world, according to Forbes Global 2000, with total assets of USD 2.2 trillion in 2007. The company employs over 275,000 employees globally and has over 200 million accounts in its franchises in over 100 countries. Citigroup was formed in 1998 with the merger of Citicorp and Travelers Group but it has its roots in the financial institutions of City Bank of New York, Bank Handlowy, Smith Barney, Banamex and Salomon Brothers. Their business covers consumer finance, brokerage, corporate banking, and insurance among others.
