Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a demarcated area within a country where the rule of business is different to attract investment, promote exports, and facilitate overall regional development. The growing number of SEZs in India are mainly concentrated in Information Technology/Information Technology enabled Services (IT/ITeS) sector. The state of Haryana is considered the IT-BPM hub of India as all the operating SEZs in Haryana are in the IT/ITeS sector. However, SEZs in IT/ITeS sector became operational after many years of notification. The developers of IT/ITeS SEZ couldn't make their SEZ operational even after many extensions of deadlines were allowed. Against this backdrop, the present study aims to find the performance of SEZ developers belonging to IT/ITeS sector in Haryana using macro-observations of available secondary data. The study concludes that there are more cancellations of approvals (formal approval or de-notification) to date than the number of operational SEZs.
