This systematic review employs the PRISMA protocol to synthesize existing literature on playful work design (PWD). We conducted performance analysis through 18 relevant articles, explained theoretical perspectives, listed variables associated with PWD, and provided future research directions and practical implications. Findings reveal growing interest in PWD, particularly in its role in enhancing employee well-being, creativity, and performance. Key theoretical foundations include self-determination theory, job demands-resources theory, and flow theory. Significant predictors of PWD include individual traits (e.g., proactive personality) and contextual factors (e.g., autonomy-supportive environments), while outcomes span improved engagement, reduced stress, and heightened innovation. Moderators such as organizational culture and mediators like positive affect further elucidate PWD’s mechanisms. The review identifies gaps, including the need for cross-cultural studies and longitudinal designs, and suggests practical strategies for integrating PWD into organizational practices. This study consolidates PWD’s theoretical and empirical landscape, offering a roadmap for future research and evidence-based applications in workplace settings.
